The President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers also criticizes Latvian doctor Juris Vidins for his statement that he would refuse to treat a patient who has a tattoo USSR or who would demand from a doctor to speak to him in Russian. The President believes that such statements are bringing shame on the doctors profession. The President also considers that the Latvian Doctors Association should evaluate Vidins statements. Latvijas Avize interviews several Latvian doctors on whether it is permissible to refuse treatment to patients due to some ideological reasons. The newspaper takes an example when ethnic Jew doctor in Germany refused to operate a patient with Nazi tattoo. One of the interviewed doctors states that he most likely would refuse to treat a patient who has a tattoo USSR or who would demand from a doctor to speak to him in Russian. The doctor states that he would refuse to treat Russian chauvinists, with the exception of urgent operation. Other interviewed doctors believe that such action is impermissible because doctors must treat all patients regardless of their own ideological or emotional attitude.
A Latvian nationalist Aivars Slucis (residing in the U.S.A) in an interview with a channel TV-5 stated that half of ethnic Russian residents should leave Latvia, at the same time, so-called “loyal” Russians can reside in the country. Mr. Slucis believes that the two main problems in Latvia are Russification and corruption. - State language inspectors will look for MP with insufficient state language proficiency at the Saeimas commissions meetings
According to Vesti Segodnya, state language inspectors are planning to visit meetings of the Saeimas commissions in order to reveal who of the MPs are insufficient in state language. Those MPs who will not participate in the discussions during the meetings most likely will be checked for Latvian language proficiency.
