Yesterday, the Saeima refused a declaration “On Ban on Justification of Nazi Regime’s Crimes, Glorification of Persons who have Fight on Nazi’s Side and Attempts to Revive Nazism” developed by the Saeima’s faction For Human Rights in United Latvia and “The Concord Centre”. The leader of “The Concord Centre” Nils Usakovs stated that adoption of the declaration would show government’s official attitude towards the issue.

Latvijas Avize prints an interview with members of extreme right-wing organisations Club 415 Janis Sils and the National Power Union Aigars Prusis. Aigars Prusis believes that Russia carries out active propaganda against Latvian WWII legion and Latvian nationalistic organisations and creates negative stereotypes about Latvians to maintain Russias influence in Latvia.

Head of Latvia’s Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Janis Pujats has sent an open letter to the Special Assignments Minister for Social Integration Oskars Kastens stating that Catholic Church believes that there are no problems concerning intolerance in Latvia. Therefore, Janis Pujats argues that there is no need to elaborate national program on combating discrimination and intolerance.

Academician Ina Druviete has stated that mandatory use of the Latvian language in service sphere has to be defined in the Law on the Protection of Consumer Rights to protect the rights of Latvian speaking people.

Diena reports that Poland is planning to grant funding in the amount of LVL 1 million (EUR 1,422,871.811) for renovation of the Polish Secondary School and the Polish Preschool in Daugavpils (city in the Eastern part of Latvia). The Polish Secondary School in Daugavpils is one of the first ethnic minority schools in Latvia established in 1991/1992.

Yesterday, the Executive Director of the Riga City Council Andris Grinbergs has stated that all organisations which applied for a permission of the Riga City Council to hold a public event on 16 March - unofficial commemoration day of Latvian legionaries - will be issued permissions. As reported, five organisations are planning to hold processions and meetings on 16 March. The Minister of Interiors Ivars Godmanis has stated that the police will be present at the places of planned events to prevent any public disorders and possible clashes.

NRA reports that an NGO - the Education Initiative Centre – printed and distributes a set of postcards aimed at promotion of Roma integration, raising awareness about equal rights of Roma children to education and promote the national action plan Roma in Latvia. The post cards are drawings of school children depicting their images of Roma. The other side of the post-cards provides information on Roma integration activities in Latvia.

Diena reports that today, the Riga City Council will review applications of several organisations asking the Riga City Council to issue permissions to hold public activities on 16 March. As reported, three organisations are planning to hold commemorational processions; while Latvian Anti-fascistic Committee – a meeting against fascism and a member of the Riga City Council Genadijs Kotovs (FHRUL) is planning to hold a procession aimed at the protection of rights of tenants of denationalised houses.
