The State Border Guard Service received an application from three citizens of Georgia asking for asylum in Latvia. According to forecast of the United Nations Organisation, about 115 000 people might became refugees after military conflict between Russia and Georgia.

Latvijas Avize prints an article about anti-discrimination activities towards Roma people in Europe and Latvia. According to the Latvian Citizenship and Migration Board, there are 8, 600 ethnic Roma in Latvia. Head of the Roma Union in Latvia Leons Gidra states that situation of Roma people in Latvia is better than in other European countries because level of culture of Latvian Roma is higher. However, Leons Gidra states that although Roma are willing to study and work there are lots of prejudices against them. According to a representative of the Secretariat of Special Assignments Minister for Social Integration, there is a national program on integration of Roma in Latvia for 2007-2009 aimed at promotion of inclusion of Roma into society, combating discrimination as well as effective implementation of equal opportunities in education, employment and human rights.
