The Hansabanka has conducted a research on the lack of labour force in Latvia. The main conclusion of the study is that the country has an urgent need of guest workers. Authors of the study state that local human resources cannot meet growing economical needs of the country. Therefore, national immigration policy should be more flexible. However, the Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis believes that no changes should be in introduced in Latvias immigration policy, arguing that non-qualified labour force will hinder development of the economy. While the Minister of Economics Aigars Stokenbergs considers that Latvia has to examine a possibility to soften its immigration regime but only regarding highly qualified workers.
