Vesti Segodnya reprints fragments of the article by the Head of the Department of Social and Economical Rights of The Latvian National Human Rights Office Anita Kovalevska published by the public policy portal www.politika.lv. The official criticises the draft amendments to the Law on Meetings, Pickets and Mass Rallies, which in her opinion restrict freedom of speech. The draft amendments are developed by the Ministry of Interior and among other also provide that the distance between the locations of two different meetings, demonstrations or pickets may not be less than 300 meters, the same distance should be observed between the location of a meeting, demonstration and picket and a public event organised by state or municipal institutions on a red-letter day if a meeting, demonstration or picket is not in the line with the spirit of a red-letter day. The draft amendments also provides that the Cabinet of Ministers has the right to issue regulations which would prohibit holding of a meeting, picket or demonstration on specific days and places if it is necessary to protect the interests of the state and society and the rights and freedoms of other people. According to Anita Kovalevska, the draft amendments are not well considered and are the reaction to the particular protest actions organised by the Headquarters for the Defence of Russian-language Schools on 16March and 4 May near the Monument of Freedom.

Newspapers report on the pre-election campaign of the union For Human Rights in the United Latvia (FHRUL) in Rezekne (the town in Eastern Latvia where the repeated municipal elections are planned in August).
