  • Ministry of Justice paid compensation to Andris Jordans acquitted in the case of incitement to ethnic hatred
The Ministry of Justice paid compensation in amount of LVL 1179 (EUR 1648) to Andris Jordans acquitted in the case of incitement to ethnic hatred. As reported, a neo-Nazi Andris Jordans was sentenced to two years and one month of imprisonment for statements that Jews and Roma people are ‘non-humans’ and it would be preferable to exterminate them made at public discussion. However, in February 2010, the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court completely acquitted Andris Jordans.

  • Latvijas Avize: Russian language dominates in labour market

Latvijas Avize prints an article about domination of Russian language in labour market in Latvia. According to the article, Russian language is required in raw with Latvian language proficiency for majority of vacancies. Head of the Control Department of the State Language Centre Antons Kursitis believes that such situation discriminates those young people who learned English, German, French and other foreign languages except Russian during last 18 years. Mr. Kursitis also considers that specific rules of the Cabinet of Ministers should prohibit requirement for obligatory Russian language from candidates for vacancies if half of the workers already are proficient in Russian language.

According to the Latvia’s Ex-Ambassador to Russia Janis Peters, visit of the President Valdis Zatlers to Russia signifies the end of the cold war between the two countries which lasted last 16 years. Mr. Peters believes that is was not normal that Latvia and Russia during 16 years did not have relations at the highest level.

  • Nationalists party „All for Latvia! does not support visa-free regime with Russia

Nationalists party „All for Latvia! criticizes statement of the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers made during the visit to Russia that Latvia supports visa-free regime between Russia and the EU. According to one the partys leaders, MP Janis Iesalnieks, visa-free regime with Russia will attract large number of Russian guest workers to Latvia who might stay in Latvia thus damaging even more ethnic composition of population.   • Prosecutors Office brought a charge against person who believes that deportations of Latvian civil residents by Soviet authorities in 1941 were too soft
Newspapers report about a visit of the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers to Russia. Discussing issues regarding Latvian non-citizens, the President of Russia Dmitriy Medvedyev stated that it is internal problem of Latvia and there has to be political will to solve it.  The two Presidents agreed on establishment of a commission of Latvia’s and Russia’s historians who would together study issues around common historical events.  During the visit, Russia and Latvia exchanged with ratification documents of the social agreement between the two countries which stipulates that time period worked by Latvian non-citizens in Russia during Soviet era is included in their total length of service, thus increasing their pensions.
