International NGO World without Racism distributed a statement warning about inclusion of the nationalists union All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNIM in the Latvian government. The World without Racism believes that the party stands for mono-ethnic Latvian state and assimilation of ethnic minorities. Latvijas Avize prints an interview with the member of the nationalists union All for Latvia!- For Fatherland and Freedom/LNIM Janis Iesalnieks. Mr Iesalnieks believes that an initiative on collection of signatures for support of granting Russian language status of the official language in Latvia is anti-constitutional and the Central Election Committee should not have taken those for revision. Janis Iesalnieks also believes that it would be right to use notion colonists regarding residents who settled in Latvia during the USSR but notion occupant can be used only to military persons.

Chas reports about an international conference on community policing held by the EU Agency CEPOL in Latvia. Specialists of the European law-enforcement bodies shared their experience on work with immigrants and radicals. A representative of Belgium delegation advised to conduct prophylactic work with immigrants since their arrival to the country telling them that they should live according to this countrys law. Representatives of the British police shared their practice of attracting representatives of minorities and immigrant communities to police service thus promoting communication with these parts of residents.

Newspapers reports about the yesterday’s meeting of the President Andris Berzins with representatives of the first three political parties elected to the Saeima - the Concord Centre (CC), the Zatlers’ Reforms Party (ZRP) and the Unity. The CC believes that the best coalition’s model would be – the CC, the ZRP and the Unity. The ZRP and the Unity, in their turn, did not decide whether the third partner in the coalition will be the CC or the nationalists’ union All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNIM and promise to discuss it next week.

According to an opinion poll conducted by Neatkariga, 30% of respondents wants to see the governing coalition established by the Zatlers Reforms Party (ZRP), the Unity and the Concord Centre (CC) and the equal number of respondents wants to see in the government only the ZRP and the CC. 28% wants the government established by the ZRP, the Unity and the nationalists union All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNIM. Today, the President of Latvia Andris Berzins starts meetings with the parties about formation of the coalition.

  • Latvian Human Rights Committee prepared a letter the OSCE about the problem of non-citizenship in Latvia
The Latvian Association for Support of Schools with Russian Language of Instruction (LAShOR) made a statement criticizing the draft National Identity and Society Integration Program elaborated by the Ministry of Culture. The LAShOR considers that the draft program does not allow preservation of ethnic identity because it stipulates that only by becoming ethnic Latvian a person can be a part of the state. The LAShOR believes that the draft program is wrong on its basis and will not promote integration.

On 15 October it will become 20 years since Latvian residents got divided on citizens and non-citizens. The LHRC also collects of signatures of residents under the letter.

According to a public opinion survey conducted by “TNS Latvia” and TV channel LNT, 62% of Latvian residents do not support the proposal to grant Russian language the status of official language in Latvia. 35% of respondents support such initiative. One of the initiators of the collection of signatures in support of such initiative Vladimirs Lindermans believes that the opinion poll shows that Russian speakers as linguistic minority clearly display their will and the majority should take it into account.
