11,580 citizens signed in support of granting Russian language status of official in Latvia during the first week of state funded collection of signatures. It is required to collect at least 153,300 signatures by 30 November in order to launch national referendum for the amendments to the Constitution of Latvia. One of the leaders of the Concord Centre Janis Urbanovics believes that such initiative is a manifestation of dignity and self-respect of Russian speaking residents of Latvia. Mr Urbanovics believes that Russians who lived in Latvia for many years should protect their language and culture and it does not endangers ethnic Latvians.
