The Lawyers Support Association turned to the Security Police asking to initiate a criminal case on defamation and incitement to ethnic hatred against persons who placed comments on the Internet about one of the missing Latvian lawyers. According to a representative of the Association persons who placed the comments on several Internet portals accuse the missing lawyer of representing the interests of “Russian-Jewish mafia.”

According to the latest public opinion survey held by research centre SKDS, the Concord Centre would receive 18,2% of votes if the Saeima’s elections are held in May. The Unity would receive 13,7% of votes and the Union of Greens and Farmers – 8,5% of votes. Other parties are supported by less than 5 % of respondents. 24,1% do not know whom to vote for yet and 17,4% respondents would not participate the elections.

  • All for Latvia! and For Fatherland and Freedom/LNIM will adhere to the concept of new nationalism
  • Telegraf prints an article by the MP Janis Tutins on elimination of Latgalian language in Latvia
According to a leader of the nationalists party “All for Latvia!” Raivis Dzintars, union with For Fatherland and Freedom/LNIM will adhere to the concept of “new nationalism”, which is based on the idea of “for our values” and not on against someone. Mr. Dzintars stated that there should be strict laws and control on ethnic issues; society should be consolidated basing on Latvian language and culture and patriotic education should be implemented in all schools; and the goal of national parties should be to stand tough for ethnic Latvian Latvia.

Telegraf prints an article by the MP Janis Tutins on elimination of Latgalian language in Latvia. Mr. Tutins believes that Latgalian speakers are minority, however, they do not have any status in Latvia so they cannot even receive education in Latgalian or learn Latgalian in schools. Janis Tutins considers that the government should provide opportunity to study the language for those who want it in order to develop and preserve Latgalian cultural component in Latvian cultural heritage.

Chas reports that the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCME) finally accepted documents for naturalisation from the leader of Latvian National Bolsheviks Vladimirs Lindermans. Previously, Mr. Lindermans made four attempts to submit the documents but the OCMA refused to accept those arguing that he did not live permanently in Latvia during last five years.

Political party the Concord Centre (SC) is planning to appeal to the Constitutional Court if the new Law of Electronic Mass Media stipulating language quotas is approved by the Saeima. As reported, the amendments to the draft Law on Electronic Mass Media stipulate that TV channels which have status of national channels will have to broadcast in Latvian language not less than 65% of their air time and 100% during the prime time (from 7 pm to 12 pm).

  • Study: shortage of labour force in Latvia will be felt starting from 2016

Latvijas Avize reports about a study Quantitative Analysis of Migration Impact on Economy conducted by a company Economic Forecasting Centre. According to the study, Latvian economy will feel the shortage of labour force starting from 2016 and, therefore, the state should elaborate immigration policy in order to control the process. In the absence of elaborated immigration policy, the immigration process will take place hastily and illegally
