Telegraf reports that the European Commission is planning to set standard procedures on acceptance of seasonal workers from non-EU countries. This could mean that all the EU countries including Latvia will have to accept guest workers on the basis of common procedural rules. The draft stipulates easier employment procedures for guest workers and raises their social security.

The Administrative Court of Riga District decreed that the Riga City Council did not have sufficient justification to ban the event devoted to the entry of Nazi troops to Riga held on 1 July. According to the Court, organisers of the action wanted to honour the memory of Latvian patriots but the City Council had only suspicions that they wanted to glorify Nazism or incite ethnic hatred. The Court said that the event cannot be banned on the basis of suspicions alone.

The owner believes that his car was burned because it was decorated with Russian flag and symbols and when he saw his car burning he also noticed a graffiti written on his car in Latvian “Do not love Russia!” However the fire destroyed the car completely so it is impossible to prove if ethnic hatred was indeed a motive behind this act of vandalism.
