Board member of the nationalists union All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNIM, MP Janis Iesalnieks decided not to stand in the up-coming Saeimas election taking political responsibility for his statement about the tragic events in Norway. Janis Iesalnieks also resigned from the unions board members post. The State Language Centre (SLC) fined a board member of the political party For Human Rights in United (FHRUL) Latvia Aleksandrs Kuzmins for dissemination of leaflets in Russian language on 9 May during the celebration events of Victory Day in Riga. According to the decision of the SLC, the leaflets had to be translated into Latvian language for the security reasons and administrative control. Chas

The Saeima forwarded to the Legal Committee draft amendments to the Saeima’s Rules of Procedure stipulating that at least 10,000 Latvian citizens and permanent residents may submit a collective initiative concerning legal acts to the Saeima.

According to the draft amendments, the Saeima will have to review such collective proposal at its session and if it is approved by the majority of MPs the draft proposal should be forwarded to the parliamentary Committees for discussion and revision. According the acting Minister of Interior Aigars Stokenbergs, all the organisations are well known to the Security Police and those are being watched.

Yesterday, MP Valerijs Agesins (Concord Centre) appealed to the Security Police asking to initiate criminal procedures against a board member of the nationalists union All for Latvia! / For Fatherland and Freedom/LNIM Janis Iesalnieks for his comments about tragic events in Norway. As reported, Janis Iesalnieks in his Twitter forum stated that multiculturalists should feel guilty for the massacre because their policy of islamisation led to insanity of the attacker. Chas prints an interview with the head of an NGO Union of Citizens and Non-citizens Vladimirs Sokolovs about initiative called Movement 2013 aimed at granting non-citizens voting rights in local election in 2013. According to Mr. Sokolovs, the main task of the movement is to involve non-citizens in the public life by giving them voting rights in local elections and it will not insist on granting other rights. Mr. Sokolovs believes that a choice whether to become a full fledged citizen of Latvia should be a moment of self-determination of every person.

According to the preliminary results, about 94% of Latvian citizens who took part in the referendum on 23 July voted for early dissolution of the Parliament of Latvia. The main value of the union is ethnically Latvian, politically active family. The union supports severe state language policy and naturalisation procedure. According to the Minister of Culture Sarmite Elerte, international contest of young pop-singers “New Wave” organised by Russia’s TV channel in Jurmala (seaside resort city near Riga) symbolizes ex-soviet space which Latvia wants to leave forever.  The Minister believes that the level of the contest is average and she fails to understand why it is specially marked out among other events in Jurmala. Deputies of the Jurmala City Council oppose the Minister’s statement arguing that the “New Wave” brings about seven millions Lats  (ten million Euros) in the city’s budget and makes Jurmala recognisable in other countries. As reported, a group of nationalists held a protest against the contest yesterday.
