Regional seminar ‘Prevention of Discrimination in Europe and Latvia: Theory and Practice’ takes place in Liepaja

On 9 September 2004 the LCHRES in co-operation with the Liepaja Centre of NGOs organised the first seminar in the series of seminars on discrimination prevention ‘Prevention of Discrimination in Europe and Latvia: Theory and Practice’ in Liepaja, hotel ‘Amrita’.

The seminar’s agenda covered the following topics: development and legislation of discrimination prevention measures in the European Union; the current situation in Latvian legislation; court cases in Latvia and the role of NGOs. The Head of the Liepaja Centre of NGOs Lasma Vaice introduced participants to her personal experience in dealing with discrimination cases. The analysis of a specific discrimination case and discussions concluded the seminar.

In the framework of the three-year project ‘Prevention of Discrimination in Latvia’ funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MATRA programme), implemented by the Latvian Centre for Human Rights and Ethnic Studies (LCHRES) in partnership with the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC), the LCHRES plans to hold six regional seminars with the aim to strengthen the anti-discrimination capacity of Latvian NGOs.

The LCHRES plans to hold next seminars on discrimination prevention in Jelgava, Daugavpils, Valmiera, Ventspils and Aluksne.
