A “well informed source in diplomatic circles” has announced that the OSCE High Commissioner Max van der Stoel during his meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov will put the main accent on the situation of Russian-speakers in the CIS and the Baltic Countries. “The discussion will mainly treat the aspects that are of concern for the Russian side: the situation in Latvia, Estonia and the Ukraine.

After a six-month long attempts to reach agreement on reorganization of universities the government on Tuesday accepted the plan on joining the Medical Academy to the University of Latvia. The medical subjects of the Academy will be joined with the branch of medical science in the university. Social science subjects will be added to the group of social science subjects.

Head of the People’s Party Saeima faction Gundars Berzins announced yesterday that due to the development of the on-going pedophilia scandal and confrontation between the legislative power and the judiciary Latvia may see a parliamentary crisis that could lead to dismissal of the Saeima. President Freiberga said earlier that she had no reason to think about the crisis, also, most of the politicians and political scientists do not predict the mentioned development of events.

After the initiative of Latvia’s Way party Janis Adamsons will ask the commission investigating in pedophilia case to decide on giving over the materials in the case to the Constitution Defense Office. People’s Party representatives objected the suggestion. Head of the faction Gundars Berzins allows the possibility that foreign special services could be involved in organizing the scandal. Prosecutor General’s Office has started checking on the version brought up by Chairman of the Board of the oil company LatRosTrans Valentins Kokalis that the scandal was financed by several Ventspils companies. Kokalis submitted the evidence to the prosecutor yesterday.
