  • Valdis Zatlers: We dont need advices from strangers – Latvian language is and will be the only state language
Newspapers report that in response to the statement of the Mayor of Moscow Juriy Luzhkov regarding bilingualism, the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers stated that Latvia does not need advices from strangers and that Latvian language is and will be the only state language. Leader of the Concord Centre Janis Urbanovics also distanced himself from the statement of Mr.Luzhkov as “provocative”. As reported, the Mayor of Moscow Juriy Luzhkov during his visit to Riga stated that Latvia and ethnic Latvians could benefit if Latvia becomes officially bilingual, because this would open up greater opportunities.
