Integration monitor

Integration monitor is a daily Latvian press digest on ethnic minority and society integration issues. The Monitor reviews the biggest Latvian dailies: Diena, Latvijas Avize, Neatkariga (in Latvian language), Vesti Segodnya (in Russian language). In specific cases other information sources are used. Latvian Centre for Human Rights is not responsible for information published by the media.

  • Language Centre has punished a manager of a café in Riga for menu written only in Russian language
Newspapers report about a visit to Latvia of the delegation of the Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities of the Council of Europe. The delegation has visited Latvia from 9 to 13 June. In the framework of the visit, the members of the delegation have met with MPs, representatives of mass media, NGOs and human rights experts and visited second largest Latvian city Daugavpils where majority of residents are Russian speaking. The Advisory Committee will prepare its report on Latvia and recommendations on implementation of the Framework Convention by October 2008.

Latvijas Avize prints an article by Vilis Vitols (Latvian entrepreneur who lived for many decades in Venezuela) on Latvian language and multiculturalism. According to Mr. Vitols, implementation of multiculturalism should not be tolerated in Latvia because in fact it would be return of Russification.

Latvijas Avize reports that the State Language Centre has punished a manager of a café in Riga for menu written only in Russian language.
