  • Police have initiated a criminal case for allegedly racially motivated attacks on a dark-skinned citizen of Egypt
  • Candidate for the post of director of the Latvian National Human Rights Office Nils Muiznieks announces about his withdrawal from the Latvian First Party
The police have initiated a criminal case for incitement of national hatred. On Saturday morning in Riga Old Town four men verbally attacked a dark-skinned Egyptian citizen and then attacked him physically as well. A staff member of a close-by casino saw the incident and called the police. The police detained 2 of the attackers and brought charges against them for incitement of national hatred in accordance with Article 78 of the Criminal Law. It should be noted that this is the first criminal case initiated on the basis of the Article 78 of the Criminal Law, which provides imprisonment up to 10 years for a deed, which was purposefully aimed at incitement of national hatred.
