Illegal immigrants coming from the CIS can be a serious threat to the Baltic countries. Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia can become a shelter place for persons who do not reach their travel destination – western countries, if the agreements with Russia and Byelorussia regarding delivering up illegal travellers are not made in the nearest future.

Yesterday the Governmental Committee accepted the procedure on the deprivation, refusal and renewal of the citizenship of Latvia. If a person wants to give up the status of a non-citizen, it is free of charge, however, if a person wants to give up the status of a citizen, he/she has to pay 15 lats. The same amount should be paid for the renewal of the status of a citizen (but the cases when the citizenship was lost because of a legal mistake).
