Integration monitor

Integration monitor is a daily Latvian press digest on ethnic minority and society integration issues. The Monitor reviews the biggest Latvian dailies: Diena, Latvijas Avize, Neatkariga (in Latvian language), Vesti Segodnya (in Russian language). In specific cases other information sources are used. Latvian Centre for Human Rights is not responsible for information published by the media.

Chas reports that the High Commissioner on National Minorities of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe Knut Vollebaek has arrived with a visit to Latvia. Today, the Commissioner meets several Ministers and other officials.

Telegraf reports about a meeting of the Minister of Education Tatjana Koke with the representatives of the Latvian Association for Support of Russian Language Schools (LASHOR in its Russian acronym). In an interview with the newspaper head of the LASHOR Igors Pimenovs has stated that the aim of the meeting was to inform about LASHORs position on basic principles regarding ethnic minority education in Latvia. According to the Mr. Pimenovs, LASHOR is pleased with opening of dialogue with the Minister of Education.

Latvijas Avize prints an interview with the Head of the Saeimas European Affairs Committee, MP Vaira Paegle. Mrs. Paegle is concerned that Russian language is widespread and is more demanded in Latvia than official languages of the EU. Vaira Paegle criticizes Latvian TV channels because the majority of them broadcast partly in Russian language. Mrs. Paegle considers that this fact hinders integration of Russian speakers into Latvian society.
