Integration monitor

Integration monitor is a daily Latvian press digest on ethnic minority and society integration issues. The Monitor reviews the biggest Latvian dailies: Diena, Latvijas Avize, Neatkariga (in Latvian language), Vesti Segodnya (in Russian language). In specific cases other information sources are used. Latvian Centre for Human Rights is not responsible for information published by the media.

The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament (EP) has supported the draft amendments to the regulations of the EU visa regime proposed by the MEP from Latvia Tatjana Zdanoka. According to the draft amendments Latvian and Estonian non-citizens will be able to travel within the EU without visas. Tatjana Zdanoka has stated that the draft amendments might come into force as of January 2007.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Terry Davis has criticized Latvia and Estonia for the situation concerning non-citizens. In an interview to Russian journalists Terry Davis has stated that Russian speaking residents who have arrived to the Baltic States during the Soviet period should not be called and treated as occupants.
