The former Minister of Interior Eriks Jekabsons in an interview with Vesti Segodnya stated that an influx of guest workers form the ‘third-world countries should be expected in the immediate future. At least 50,000 Latvian residents have left the country in a year and half… The biggest employers are already looking for guest workers… If the government does not re-evaluate its social, tax, and economic policy, we should get ready for the influx of people from the worlds poorest countries, considers Eriks Jekabsons.

During the consultations on human rights between Russia and the European Union, the Russian delegation again attempted to draw attention to violations of the rights of national minorities in Latvia. “The situation concerning Russian-speaking residents in Latvia has become worse. Violations of their rights are a systematic problem,” stated Russia’s representative.
