Despite considerable pressure from the leaders of the Latvian Social Democratic Workers Party (LSDSP), LSDSP Saeima faction deputy Peteris Salkazanovs will quit the faction and join a new Saeima faction that is also to include four current members of the LSDSP faction. Salkazanovs confirmed to LETA once more that he, the current LSDSP faction's chairman Egils Baldzens, deputies Imants Burvis, Janis Leja and Risards Labanovskis would leave the LSDSP faction and form a new one.

Today the government commission will consider amendments to the Criminal Code to abolish the capital punishment in Latvia. This penalty has not been applied for several years but is still existing in the Code.
