International conference "Global, regional and national mechanisms for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment: learning from one other"

On 12-13 November, Latvian Centre for Human Rights (LCHR) organised an international conference "Global, regional and national mechanisms for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment: learning from one other. Celebrating 25 years of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture” in Riga. The conference was funded by the European Commission, the Council of Europe, and the Open Society Foundations.

Study visit on return issues to Austria

On 14-16 October, the LCHR in cooperation with the Austrian NGO Human Rights Association (Verein Menschenrechte Österreich) organized a study visit to Austria in the framework of the project „Developing good practices: promoting compliance with the Return Directive in Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia”. The study visit has brought together 10 return practitioners: the national authorities (the Ministry of Interior, the border guard, the immigration police and the Ombudsman’s Offices) as well as NGOs from Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia. The Latvian delegation was represented by the LCHR, the State Border Guard and the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

Study visit to Berlin on minority participation in public life through consultative mechanisms

At the beginning of September a group of experts from municipal or national institutions from 9 European countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, Hungary, and Romania), active members of immigrant communities from these countries and NGOs met in Berlin to learn how advisory bodies for immigrants are organized in Germany. Latvia was represented by the Latvian Centre for Human Rights, the Ministry of Culture and the Arabic Cultural centre. The study visit was organized within the framework of the project co-funded by the European Union “Fostering political participation and policy involvement of immigrants in 9 Central and Eastern EU countries”.

The National policy brief is prepared in the framework of a project „Fostering political participation and policy involvement of migrants in 9 Central and Eastern EU countries” (Agreement No. HOME/2013/EIFX/CA/ CFP/4234) supported by the European Commission's Fund fo the Integration of Third Country Nationals. The project is co-funded by the European Union Goal Encourage political participation of third country nationals through national and local level consultative bodies on integration, thus giving them an opportunity to elaborate, implement and monitor matters directly affecting them.
