The Monitor reviews the biggest Latvian dailies: Diena, Latvijas Avize, Neatkariga (in Latvian language), Vesti Segodnya (in Russian language). In specific cases other information sources are used. Newspapers report about a visit of the President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers to Russia. Discussing issues regarding Latvian non-citizens, the President of Russia Dmitriy Medvedyev stated that it is internal problem of Latvia and there has to be political will to solve it.  The two Presidents agreed on establishment of a commission of Latvia’s and Russia’s historians who would together study issues around common historical events.  During the visit, Russia and Latvia exchanged with ratification documents of the social agreement between the two countries which stipulates that time period worked by Latvian non-citizens in Russia during Soviet era is included in their total length of service, thus increasing their pensions.

The Prosecutor’s Office brought a charge against an author of an article about deportations of Latvian civil residents by Soviet authorities in 1941 who stated that deportations were too soft and unfinished. The charge brought according to the Article 74.1 of the Criminal Code – public justification, glorification or denial of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
